A downbeat Mr Hancock shared a video to Twitter in which he admitted to breaking Covid social-distancing rules with Ms Coladangelo.
Body language expert Judi James said Mr Hancock’s apology was “clearly not personal” – and that he hinted at a political comeback.
“Overall the tone, the building sense of energy and resolution make this sound very much like a man primarily focused on making a comeback,” she told The Sun Online.
“There is no reference to his wife or even implication of any shame prompted by his cheating. He seems to see this as a work-related matter rather than a personal life one.
“Although this is only a brief message, Hancock still moves through three verbal and non-verbal states.
“His first look is one of glum regret as he stares straight into the camera using a flat, low tone and a series of pauses that sound like sighs.
“There is still an air of arrogance in his words though as he tells us ‘This is why I’ve got to resign’, steering us to what he sees as the sole problem in his behaviour rather than addressing what the public might see as a matter of disapproval.”
It comes as…
- Matt Hancock announced he was resigning almost 48 hours after his affair with his aide was exposed
- The Health Secretary told his wife he was leaving her as the affair was revealed
- Gina Coladangelo has left her position on the Department of Health board after the affair with Hancock
- Read Matt Hancock’s resignation letter in full
- Boris Johnson told Hancock ‘you should be proud of what you’ve achieved’ as he accepted his resignation
- Sajid Javid will be the new Health Secretary
Ms James said Mr Hancock’s shoulders rising at the end of the first section of the video showed that he was tying to “subtly reboot his power signals”.
The ex-Health Secretary’s messages of thanks sounded “very much like an Oscar-winner’s speech” according to Ms James.
She said: “‘He loses the look of submissive compliance and begins to sound more like an award winner.
“His thanks sound like a reminder of what he achieved in his time in the job.
“When he says ‘I’m very proud of what we’ve done’ there are micro-gestures to suggest defiance, with a small jaw-jut, head-baton and even a more dramatic hiking up of one corner of his mouth as he says ‘the fastest in the world’.”
The body language expert said the final part of Mr Hancock’s video reminded her of Theresa May’s tearful resignation.
Ms James said: “It is a political-sounding pitch including ‘make sure we can get out of the pandemic’ followed by a political soundbite: ‘Build Back Better’.
“And lastly a moment selling the idea of dedication to the cause where, like May, his voice sounds on the brink of cracking to suggest tears as he tells us ‘This country can fulfil its potential’.”

Mr Hancock is said to be “serious” about lover Gina Coladangelo with the couple “likely to set up home together” despite their romance only starting in May.
He told wife Martha he was leaving her on the night his affair was first revealed, it was reported.
According to The Sunday Times, she had no idea what was going on until he broke the news and announced their marriage was over.
Now a friend of Mr Hancock has revealed: “Matt and Gina are in love” adding the relationship started in May “but it is serious.”
A friend told The Sunday Times: ““It is a love match. They’re setting up home.”
Others said the affair began up to six months ago and some even gently questioned the nature of their relationship in 2019, reports the Mail on Sunday.
Maxie Allen – programme co-ordinator at university radio station Oxygen where Mr Hancock and Ms Coladangelo met – said he “always had a crush on her”.
However, reports insist Mr Hancock’s wife Martha thought nothing was going on.
