The five best treehouse holidays in Yorkshire, for a sky-high break in God’s Own County

Now that the majority of Covid-19 travel restrictions have been shelved, many people are looking towards overseas holidays to take this year.

But for those of you wanting to stay closer to home – and not wanting to bother with vaccine passes, pre-departure tests, and the possibility of quarantine should rules change randomly – the staycation is still a great idea.

In the UK we’re blessed with stunning coastlines and countryside, and there are plenty of great places for a nearby break, with different hotspots catering to whatever atmosphere you’re looking to find.

One type of staycation that has gained popularity in recent years is the treehouse holiday, allowing a glam but rustic stay surrounded by the woods.

We all loved Winnie The Pooh, and staying in a treehouse like the honey-loving bear (which does actually exist) is a unique and interesting holiday choice. Plus, you don’t necessarily have to shell out hundreds of pounds or sacrifice your comfort for the chance.

Yorkshire is one county that has a particular abundance of treehouses. Already a popular region with tourists, these canopy lodgings allow for a sense of escape between visiting attractions and seeing sights.

Or, you could just stay in your woodland bolthole for your whole break, making the most of the surrounding nature and relishing the peace and quiet.

Regardless of your preferences, we’ve compiled a list of some of Yorkshire’s most unique and beautiful treehouse holiday homes, so you can see the pull of holidaying between the branches.

1. The Dale Farm Treehouse

This gorgeous treehouse is located in the village of Hunmanby, North Yorkshire, near Scarborough.

It offers a tranquil atmosphere and a rural location, but provides easy access to nearby attractions like the Yorkshire Wolds and the seaside town of Filey Bay.

It may be in a tree, but you won’t be deprived of basic amenities like a hot shower or a fully-equipped kitchen.

The host offers essentials such as towels, bed sheets, soap, toilet paper, and crockery, so you won’t have to bring much else aside from clothes and books for your stay.

Of course, in the modern age we live in, the treehouse does have WiFi, as well as dedicated workspace with space for a laptop if you do really need to respond to that all-important email.

Featuring an indoor wood-burning fireplace so you can cosy up in front of the fire and enjoy the views outside, the property also encompasses a private patio and grass garden area.

The Airbnb listing says it’s most suitable for couples, but owners allow pets so you don’t have to leave fur babies behind.

It has four star reviews across the board, and costs £148 per night. Split between two, it’s not outlandish for the unique and beautiful experience it offers.

Some reviews recommend not visiting the treehouse in the winter because it’s not very well insulated, so maybe plan your trip for the summer months – this way you can take advantage of the barbecue available, too.

Book now via Airbnb.

2. Rufus’s Roost Treehouse

Located in Hustwaite, York, this treehouse is a luxury glamping experience for everyone involved.

There are three bedrooms, sleeping up to six people in total, and all bedding and towels are provided.

It is self-catering so guests will have to buy their own food and drink, but the amenities on offer here mean you won’t be bored with your cooking options.

A pizza oven, a log burning stove, and an outdoor woodland fire pit should satisfy the amateur chefs among us, or there’s a fully equipped kitchen if they want to keep things simple.

In terms of fun, this place is full of things that will make your stay even better. It features a hot tub, a secret slide for your inner child, a den with a games console, and Wifi for streaming and uploading pictures to Instagram (because of course).

The views from this treehouse are indeed beautiful, as you will get to see panoramic views of the tree tops which overlook a secluded woodland.

Nature lovers can also take a walk through Baxby Manor, where Rufus’s is located, and spot a variety of woodland animals and plants.

None of this comes cheap, as it works out to £362 per night. But, if you do manage to get some friends along with you, £60 per person per night isn’t too extortionate for what you’re getting.

Book now via Baxby Manor’s website.

3. Wolds Edge Treehouse

Wolds Edge treehouse is located just 12 miles from the city of York and a stone’s throw away from the East Yorkshire Coast, so if you do get bored of countryside life, you have somewhere to go.

That said, getting bored is not looking likely, as Wolds Edge has absolutely everything you need in the vicinity for a chilled or action-packed staycation.

Guests are offered Wellington boots for romantic walks, and they can get involved in horse riding opportunities through the hills as well as a number of cycle routes nearby.

It only sleeps two people, so Wolds Edge is more of a romantic getaway than a group trip, but the treehouse has all the modern amenities you’d need including a kitchen, dishwasher, heating, en-suite shower, and dressing gowns and slippers.

The nightly rate of £273 is not cheap, but it is affordable if split between you and a close friend or partner, or if you’re looking at booking for your anniversary getaway.

Book now via the Wolds Edge website, but be aware you’re booking for ‘The Treehouse’ rather than their other named lodges.

4. Rodmer Clough Tree Cabin

This cosy little treehouse cabin located in East Yorkshire and looking out over an ancient mill pond is a great idea for adventurous friends or couples.

Despite being secluded, the fully heated cabin means you can visit in all weathers, and it has a private bathroom where you can have a warm shower right next to the woods.

Inside, your bijoux accommodation has a kitchenette for preparing meals, as well as a comfortable double bed next to a floor-to-ceiling window for views overlooking the pond.

There’s the chance to go kayaking or explore the forest nearby with scenic walks, and hosts offer a simple continental breakfast for guests with alternatives available by request.

If being so secluded scares you, there are a number of local attractions that you can take a gander at, including Hebden Bridge town with a cinema and shops, Hardcastle Craggs National Trust site, and Colden Water river which runs through Rodmer Clough.

Book via Airbnb from £110 per night.

5. Golden Oak Treehouse

Forest Holidays offers a number of beautiful secluded holiday locations in – you guessed it – the forest.

One of their most popular properties is the Golden Oak Treehouse in Keldy, North Yorkshire, which provides an authentic experience for up to eight guests.

Another luxury experience that offers a hot tub and four bedrooms for your friends (Picture: Forest Holidays)

There’s everything you need in the cabin, with four twin rooms and one double bedroom, and an extra ensuite bedroom across a rope bridge.

A hot tub, a log burning stove in the living room, a gas barbecue (the gas is provided on-site), and a Nespresso coffee machine add to the feeling of luxury here.

And in case you were under any allusions you might be roughing it, be assured hosts will provide robes, hairdryers, all soft furnishings, and luxurious toiletries for all guests. Heating, TV, and Wifi also come as standard.

For all four bedrooms, it costs £626.67 per night (£80 per person split between eight people). Not bad at all for the amenities available at this picturesque Yorkshire location.

Book now via Forest Holidays.
