Moscow, Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine after losing one of its most important ships in the Black Sea. The Russian military is pushing for full capture of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol. The army destroyed a huge steel plant on Sunday. Russia has demanded that Ukraine’s troops surrender, but Ukraine has refused.
Ukraine’s prime minister says his troops will remain in Mariupol and will face Russia to the last breath. The Russian military has told Ukrainian troops stationed in Mariupol that if they lay down their arms, they will be guaranteed survival. The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that Ukrainian troops would only survive if they surrendered.
Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman Konashenkov said those who continued to protest were doomed. In response, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shimgal said that we will fight to the last to win this war. Ukraine is ready to end the war through diplomacy, but our intention is not to surrender. On this side, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Hanna Malayar described Mariupol as a shield to protect Ukraine. He said that despite the Russian attack on Mariupol, the Ukrainian army was still there.
Russia wants to capture Mariupol soon. Because doing so would give it a ground corridor to Crimea. After defeating the Ukrainian forces in Mariupol, the Russian forces stationed there will be able to advance towards Donbass. Russia occupied Crimea in 2014. It is worth mentioning here that the Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for more than 90 days. But so far no concrete results have been forthcoming
