A three-day-old baby was bitten by rats at a government hospital in Giridih, Jharkhand and is in critical condition. According to the report, two nurses have been fired after a case of medical negligence came to light and a committee has been formed to look into the matter. A newborn baby was bitten by rats in a government hospital in Jharkhand’s Giridih district.
The incident took place on May 9 at Giridih Sadar Hospital and the newborn was rushed to Dhanbad’s Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Doctors at SNMMCH said the baby’s condition was now stable.
Mother Mamta Devi said that when she visited her newborn baby in the Model Maternal and Child Health Ward of Giridih Hospital, she got a deep wound on the baby’s knee due to being eaten by rats.
The baby was born on April 6 and was admitted to the MCH because she was having trouble breathing after birth. The mother said the nurse on duty told her the baby had jaundice. The nurse also advised the child to be admitted to a better hospital.
Officials said the district administration has ordered an investigation into the incident and recommended action against the doctor on duty. Giridih Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyesh Lakra said a letter has been sent to the Additional Chief Secretary, Health Department, Jharkhand to take action against the doctor on duty at Giridih Sadar Hospital.
