Chandigarh, Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala has been convicted by a court in a corruption case, raising hopes that Chautala will return to Haryana politics.
The ruling is being seen as beneficial for the BJP-JPP alliance. According to analysts, the re-arrest of Chautala has paved the way for a BJP-JPP as the Congress is not in a position to challenge the BJP in Haryana. Chautala is a big leader of the Jat community but now that the jailed Jat community will turn to BJP’s ally Dushyant Chautala, the alliance will benefit in the long run.
Chautala’s sentence will be announced on May 8. Chautala has been found guilty of amassing assets worth Rs 5.04 crore in excess of his income between 2006 and 2009. Chautala’s assets worth Rs 3.5 crore were seized by the ED in 2014.
Chautala was also convicted in the JBT recruitment scam in 2012 and sentenced to seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act and 10 years for conspiracy. He was released on July 7 last year after completing his sentence
