Colombo, Sri Lanka batsman Danushka Gunathilaka has been suspended from all formats of cricket by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman during the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia on Sunday. The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to suspend Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.
Sri Lanka Cricket has emphasized its zero tolerance stance for any such conduct and has mandated that appropriate steps be taken to investigate the alleged case as soon as possible. With this, Sri Lanka Cricket will take necessary steps to immediately investigate the alleged offence.
At the conclusion of the above court case in Australia, steps will be taken to penalize the player if he is found guilty. Sri Lanka Cricket asserted that it would provide all necessary support to Australian law enforcement officials to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident.
Sri Lanka left the country without Danushka Gunathilka after being knocked out of the T20 World Cup on Saturday. Earlier on Monday, the local court refused to grant bail to Gunathilaka. He attended the hearing via video link at the Surrey Hills Division of the local court. According to the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’, Gunathilaka was handcuffed during a virtual appearance at the hearing.
The report said his lawyer Anand Amarnath applied for bail during the hearing but Magistrate Robert Williams denied bail. The report quoted Amarnath as saying, “Definitely we are considering filing a petition in the Supreme Court and that will be done as soon as possible.
