(Agency) Beijing, A shocking report on deaths due to corona virus has come out from China. China has reported nearly 60,000 Covid-related deaths in the first five weeks of its current outbreak, the highest number in the world by far, experts said. The National Health Commission revealed later this week that China’s sudden pivot from Covid zero in early December led to a spike in Omicron infections and 59,938 virus-related deaths in the country’s hospitals as of January 12.
While the official tally has dropped the previously reported death toll by a few dozen, it has drawn widespread criticism both nationally and internationally, including from the World Health Organization. Experts say, this current outbreak is likely to subside to a larger scale. Based on a 0.1 percent case fatality rate in Rudiwadi, 900,000 people would have been killed in the past five weeks.
That means the official hospital mortality rate is less than 7 percent of the total reported during the outbreak. Official figures mean 1.17 deaths per day for every million people in the country over five weeks, according to Bloomberg experts. This is much lower than the average daily death rate reported in other countries.
