Recently, a 51-year-old businessman living in South Mumbai lodged a complaint that some persons had cheated him of Rs 1.5 crore by promising to pay Rs 45,000 per month as rent for installing a mobile tower on the roof of his house. Which he paid from 32 RTGS transactions in last two years.
“We have registered a case of fraud and forgery under IPC and Information Technology Act,” said Cyber Police DCP Balsingh Rajput, Crime Branch. Along with this, he requested the citizens not to fall into such greedy temptations and check the details once before investing anywhere. In the complaint filed last week, the businessman said that in 2021, he received a message on WhatsApp from an unknown number.
The sender of the message claimed to be an employee of a mobile company and was looking for a place to install a mobile tower. The businessman showed interest and the two started chatting on WhatsApp. A few days later, the businessman received a message saying that he would get a monthly rent of 45 thousand and a deposit of 15 lakhs for installing the tower.
He was asked to transfer 20 thousand rupees for registration. In the next three days, he gave a total of Rs 1.21 lakh’, the police officer said.
‘The accused asked him to give the ownership papers for the roof, which he did. Then a message came that the company had given permission to install a mobile tower on their roof. Along with this ‘Agreement Document’ was also sent to them.SS1MS
