Gandhidham: Tokyo Olympic Games silver medalist Bhavina Patel of Gujarat and her long-time partner Sonal Patel won the gold medal in the ITTF Costa Brava Spanish Para Open Table Tennis Tournament held at Platja d’Aro. The pair competed in the Women’s Doubles (X5-10) category. Bhavina and Sonal won doubles gold in ITTF Costa Brava Spanish Para Open table tennis tournament.
The Ahmedabad duo had an easy victory in the previous round as they defeated Brazil’s Santos Amaral and Israel’s Carolina Tabib 3-0 to enter the final.
However, in the final, the Indian pair was trailing 0-2 at one point against the pair of Mi Lee and Mi Shin of Korea and their defeat seemed certain. However, the Ahmedabadi players chose to push forward without losing courage and won the next three games to turn the match in their favor.
Apart from this, Bhavina also entered the finals of Women’s Singles Class 4-5 category. The left-hander was unsuccessful in the final and had to settle for the silver medal as she lost 0-3 to Germany’s Sandra Mikolschke.
The Tokyo Games medalist also made it to the final of the mixed doubles class 7-10 with his mixed doubles partner Jaswant Chaudhary and eventually bagged a silver medal.
President of Gujarat State Table Tennis Association Mr. Pramod Chowdhury said that “It is a good thing that the para table tennis players of Gujarat are performing brilliantly at the international level. He is motivating all the rest of our players.”
