There’s nothing worse than – after months of planning and building excitement – going on holiday and getting sick.
Whether it’s eating something dodgy or catching a bug, being ill on holiday really does put a damper on things – especially when you’re spending your days with your head in a toilet bowl, rather than seeing the sights.
But it seems, according to new research, there are some destinations where this is more likely to happen than others.
The Forbes Advisor Travel Bug Index has revealed the 25 global destinations where travellers are most likely to get sick.
To collate the data, Forbes reviewed more than 2.4 million Tripadvisor reviews containing terms such as ‘salmonella’, ‘gastroenteritis’ ‘e-coli’, and ‘food poisoning’.
They then scored the destinations under each category to create this Travel Bug Index Score on a scale of 0-100.
It seems Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, scoops first place as the top travel bug hotspot – followed by Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh and Cape Verde’s Sal in second and third, respectively.
Two spots in Mexico follow close behind – Playa del Carmen and Cabo San Lucas – as well as Bali taking sixth place.
These are the top 10 travel bug hotspots across the world:
- Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

- Sal, Cape Verde
- Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Whereas Hurghada, in Egypt, and Boa Vista, in Cape Verde, also make an appearance on the list.
But if that wasn’t enough, the travel bug index also delves into the worse European destinations – and it’s bad news if you have a trip to Benidorm planned soon.
London follows close behind in second place, while Sunny Beach, in Bulgaria, takes the third spot.
