New Delhi, Compared to other countries, US PRK citizenship is difficult to obtain and can take years to obtain. People from India, China, Mexico and the Philippines have to wait for years to get a US green card. The country based quota system is responsible for this. Why Indians have to wait for years for green card in America
That is, quotas for green cards are allocated for each country, due to which it takes years to get a green card. But a senior official has said that this quota system can only be changed by the US Congress. A green card is the official permanent resident card of the United States.
This card is a document given to immigrants to the United States as proof that that person has been granted the privilege of living in the United States.
Per-country caps are numerical limits for issuing green cards to individuals from certain countries. Immigration law provides for the issuance of approximately 1,40,000 employment-based green cards each year.
As such, only seven percent of those green cards can be granted to individuals from the same country each year. Douglas Rand, senior adviser at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, said that the annual limit for family-sponsored green cards set by Congress for the entire world is 2,26,000, while the annual limit for employment-based green cards is 1,40,000.
On top of that, the per-country limit has been set at seven percent of the total annual family-sponsored and employment-based preference limit, he told Indian Americans during a virtual town hall organized by the State Department on visa and consular issues. That means there are 25,620 green cards, making migrants from India, China, Mexico and the Philippines wait longer for green cards than people from other countries. More than 25,620 green cards are sought each year for both family and employment.
Only Congress can change this annual limit. So our job is to do everything we can within these constraints. When those green card numbers are available we make sure they are used every year. Thousands of Indian professionals are currently waiting more than a decade for a green card, and the wait for a visa is often delayed for years. However, the official said that this is not only a problem for people of India but also many other countries.SS1MS
