Marcia passed away outside her home in the Greenhill area of Sheffield on April 5 when she was mowed down by her own car.
The youngster, who was 12 at the time of the incident, has now pleaded not guilty to her killing.
But he did plead guilty to a second charge of possession of a bladed article, which was a kitchen knife, the court heard.
The boy sat in the dock for the hearing flanked by five people, who were from the organisation where he is being held and from the Youth Offending Team.
Wearing a white shirt, black tie and black trousers, he spoke only to confirm his name and to acknowledge he understood proceedings.
Mrs Justice Lambert remanded him in a youth detention centre until his next hearing on July 26.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on Hemper Lane where the social worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tributes were previously paid to Marcia with her family remembering her as a “pillar of her community”.
In a heartfelt statement, they said: “Marcia was a warm, loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and a pillar of her community.
“Her loss has already sent shockwaves through all who knew her or was lucky enough to be included in her orbit.
“We ask for privacy at this time while further investigations are underway and the Family try to come to terms with this enormous loss.”
The boy’s trial date has been set for October 2.
