THE crimes against women by policeman David Carrick are truly vile and depraved.
He is one of Britain’s worst serial rapists – guilty of multiple rapes, beatings and imprisonment.

Thanks to the bravery of those women he has now been caught.
But his crimes went undetected for years. This man should never have been a police officer and it shows the appalling failure of the system that he was for so long.
Most shocking of all is that we have been here before.
After the awful murder of Sarah Everard by a serving police officer, Government Ministers promised things would change. That has failed.
Carrick wasn’t even suspended for serious rape allegations. Domestic abuse evidence wasn’t pursued. Unbelievably his permission to carry firearms was reinstated.
Everyone who demanded change two years ago will feel badly let down.
There has been no national leadership from the Government.
Misconduct rules and investigations are still far too weak, with no compulsory standards on vetting. What are Ministers playing at?
This is devastating for victims and undermines confidence in the vital work police officers do each day. We cannot stand for this any more.

Labour has long called for action. We need a major review into what went wrong in the Carrick case.
But we must go further. The next Labour Government will change the law and bring in tough new rules on police misconduct and vetting to protect victims and rebuild confidence. Women deserve better.
