Neeraj was included in Group B in the qualification. His rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan was also in the same group. India's star wrestler Vinesh Phogat defeated the defending Olympic champion in the first round. Vinesh entered the quarterfinals of the women's 50 kg freestyle wrestling match by defeating Japan's Yui Susaki 3-2, who is also a 4-time world champion.
Susaki was a gold medalist in the 50 kg category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Indian wrestler Vinesh has boosted India's gold medal hopes by defeating him in the first round. Vinesh Phogat's win is historic as Yui Susaki did not concede a single point to any of his opponents from the first round to the final at the Tokyo Olympics.
