New Delhi, A huge landslide has occurred in Papua New Guinea, a country located in the Pacific Ocean near Indonesia. Local officials and aid groups say many people are feared dead in the landslide. More than 100 people are feared dead after a landslide hit a remote village in Papua New Guinea early Friday morning, according to reports.
The landslide hit Kaoklam village in Enga province, about 600 kilometers north-west of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, around 3 am (local time). Locals say the death toll is now estimated at more than 100.
However, officials are yet to confirm the official figures. Locals said the death toll could be higher. In a video that went viral on social media after the landslide, people could be seen climbing on large rocks and pulling out bodies from the debris and under trees.
According to the report, Elizabeth Laruma, president of the Porgera Women in Business Association, said houses collapsed when a nearby mountainside road collapsed. She said the entire village was submerged while people were sleeping in the early hours of the morning.
I estimate that more than 100 people are buried underground. Nzinga Roll, who lost four relatives in the disaster, said the landslide blocked the road to Porgera town, where a large gold mine is located. There are some large stones, plants and trees. Buildings have collapsed. Due to these things we are facing difficulty in finding dead bodies quickly.SS1MS
