Champaner is a historical town in Panchmahal district. Champaner was once the capital of Gujarat. At that time, this grand city had a unique charm. Champaner's fame was great not only in India, but also in distant countries.
Hindu, Muslim, Maratha and British rulers ruled Champaner. The monuments built by Prithviraj Chauhan's descendant Chauhan Rajputs for the development of Champaner as their capital and the palaces and mosques built by the Muslim ruler Muhammad Begda are a wonderful example of civil engineering.
Every year, thousands of tourists from home and abroad come here to understand and know the high-level Benmoon Architects. A beautiful fusion of Hindu-Jain architecture is also seen here in the monuments built by the Muslim rulers.
Various parts of the grand edifice of the Jumma Masjid outside the royal fort of Champaner are distinguished by Indo-Islamic ornamentation. Its five picturesque gateways with ornate carvings add to the charm. The five arches of its Maksura, the beautiful minarets and the main arch add to its beauty. Champaner's importance as the capital and residence of the Sultans is best illustrated in the Jama Masjid, which became the model for later mosque architecture in India.
Apart from this, Nagina Masjid and the decorated mausoleum near it, Kevada Masjid, City Mosque, Leela Gumbaj Masjid etc. also have their own unique characteristics.
Champaner is like a Triveni Sangam of Hindu, Jain and Muslim religions. Encompassing the Rudravatar Lakulish Temple, Jain temples and mosques along with the temple of Mother Mahakali, this place is a haven of religious as well as natural beauty.
