On the occasion of the 137th birth anniversary of Shri Darbarsaheb Gopaldas Desai, who stood in the front of India's independence sacrifice and surrendered his state, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mr. Shankarbhai Chaudhary paid tributes to his oil portrait at the podium of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly today.
Chairman of Legislative Assembly Mr. Shankarbhai Chaudhary said that, The Desai family had a jagir in Kheda district. Shri Darbarsaheb did a lot of good works for the farmers and poor people of the village. He led a life of simplicity instead of the comforts and opulence of a king. Shri Darbarsaheb also made great efforts to free the farmers from the interest charged by moneylenders.
Further, the chairman added that, Shri Darbarsaheb Anand, Borsad, Took the lead in many freedom struggles like Vadodara etc. Apart from this he was active in the National Convention held at Haripura village in Surat.
Shri Darbarsaheb had marched forward and surrendered his kingdom before the merger of his princely state. Thus, The Chairman paid tribute to Darbarsaheb, who was a noble personality and true meaning.
On this occasion, the in-charge secretary of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Chetan Pandya, along with the officers and staff were present and offered flowers to Mr. Darbarsaheb.
It is worth mentioning here that, Shri Darbarsaheb Gopaldas Desai was born on 19th December, He was born on 1887 at Dhasa in Amreli district and died on 5th December, It happened on 1951. Shri Darbarsaheb surrendered his small kingdom of Dhasa-Raisanklia in Saurashtra in front of India's Independence Yagya. In the year 1947, the Jagir was returned with the advent of Swaraj but Shri Darbarsaheb rejected it and made public service his field of work.
