Construction of India's first marine bridge pumba bridge began in 1911 and was opened for traffic in 1914.
Considering the National Service as a mantra, the Prime Minister has delivered the basic structure of India through his unique leadership capability, unwavering resolve and visionary thinking. The hard work of the Prime Minister, the invincible willpower and the spirit of nation formation have fulfilled every historical dream. Under his leadership, Indian Railways is also flying high in the sky of development. By making new records every day, the railway is ensuring its sufficient partnership on the journey of rich India.
The new Pumban Bridge, built on Tamil Nadu's vast Blue Sea, is also a photo of railway expansion and engineering skills that will be proud of every Indian. This is India's first vertical lift Railway Sea Bridge, which passes over the sea and connects the island of Rameswaram with the Mandapam of Tamil Nadu. The bridge is not just a means of connecting two places, but also a symbol of new technology, self-reliant India and high-speed transportation.
The unique lift system of the new Pumb Bridge allows large ships to pass easily. In addition to facilitating this bridge traffic located on the Bay of Mannar, it also has historical and mythological significance in its own way. Made with modern technology, this bridge is a major achievement for Indian Railways, which will be a tremendous promotion of tourism and trade based on maritime routes.

Transportation New Era Toward
Construction of India's first marine bridge pumba bridge began in 1911 and in 1914 it was opened for traffic. It was the only marine bridge in India at that time, which was the longest sea bridge in India until the Bandra-Warly Sea link was opened in 2010.
During his service period, the bridge saw many difficult situations and bravely faced it. The thunderstorm in 1964 caused a huge damage to the bridge, but nevertheless, it remained steadfast among the waves of the sea and dedicated to the national interest for about 106 years.
The 21st century and the changing India's transportation requirements raised many new challenges against the old Pumban Bridge. In view of this, the need for a new design corresponding to the needs of modern trains and large sea ships was felt. To meet this need, the construction of this new bridge was laid in 2019 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Due to the unprecedented pace of passion and development of innovation, this wonderful construction on the sea was completed in just 4 years.
Pumb Bridge Of Feature
This magnificent structure of 2.08 km is 3 meters taller than the old pumb bridge, allowing smaller ships to easily pass under it. 99 spans of 18.3 meters have been used to make this entire bridge. There is also a 72.5 meter vertical lift span in the center of the bridge, which can be raised up to 17 meters to accommodate large ships if needed.
The bridge has been designed for a double rail line with a strong base using 333 piles and 101 piles caps. Along with the heavy fraudsters, the fast-moving high-speed high-speed trains can pass very easily as well as Vande India. Also, an excellent security system has been adopted to protect its surface for up to 58 years.
During the construction of this bridge, special attention was paid to situations such as sea storms, heavy winds and tidal. The use of polysiloxen paint, stainless steel and fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) will keep it strong and durable even though it is in contact with saline water.
Build Of Achievement
The bridge is more durable than the old bridges and is designed using modern technology. Its sub-tractor was also completed before the stipulated timeframe, which ensures its strength. With precision and wonderful engineering, this pool has made 99 spans for a single line and installed with excellence. Its construction techniques and design make it an important structure not only in South India but also across the country.
Design In Technology Incorporation
The bridge is designed by Jahan International Consultant Typsa, while the design has been tested by IIT Chennai and IIT Bombay. The use of high-grade materials and stainless steel has made it a strong, safe and low-maintained structure. The center of the bridge has a 72.5-meter vertical lift span, which can be high and below the size of the ships.
Faith And Progress No Confluence
The Pumban Bridge has a direct relationship with Lord Ram and Lord Shiva. The bridge, which connects the island with the main land, Rameswaram, is considered as very sacred in Hinduism. The Rameshwaram Temple, located here, is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is believed that when Lord Shri Ram was going to climb Lanka, he founded this Jyotirlinga and worshiped Lord Shiva.
