Dhaka, Violence has erupted between opponents and supporters of the ruling party in Bangladesh, demanding an end to job reservations and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. So far, around 100 people including 14 policemen have lost their lives.
A large number of people have been injured. The situation is so bad that an indefinite curfew has been imposed across the country and internet banned.
The long-running student protests turned violent on Sunday demanding the abolition of the quota system for government jobs. The protesters say that their only demand now is the resignation of PM Sheikh Hasina. At least 100 people were killed in clashes, shootings and retaliation across the country, the leading Bangladesh newspaper Pratham Alo said.
According to the police headquarters, 14 policemen have been killed across the country. Out of which 13 died in the same police station of Inayatpur, Sirajganj. Around 300 policemen are said to have been injured.
Violence has erupted many times in Bangladesh over this issue. In fact, the protesters are demanding that the quota system that reserves 30 percent government jobs for the families of 1971 freedom fighters be abolished. Earlier, when violence erupted, the court reduced the quota limit. But the violence has not stopped and now the protesters are demanding Sheikh Hasina's resignation.
So far more than 11 thousand people have been arrested. Officials claimed that protesters attacked police stations, ruling party offices and the residences of their leaders and torched several vehicles. The government has ordered the shutdown of the meta platforms Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram.SS1MS
